Point sources

Point sources (or compact objects) range from compact cores in pre-stellar stages, to Young Stellar Objects still deeply embedded in their progenitor clouds, radio-emitting stars and Supernova Remnants. Many local examples of these classes are expected to emit brightly enough to be detected in the range of frequencies to which Planck is sensitive. Indeed some of these (often cold) objects only emit at these frequencies. In the Table, an overview is presented of the global properties of the different classes of compact stellar objects observable with Planck.

Properties of compact galactic sources

The study of these objects using the Planck data will be an important contribution to the study of star formation. Details on some of the more interesting classes are provided in the following sections:

- HII regions
- Cold cores and early stages of stellar evolution
